New Jersey Republican Sen. Frank Lautenberg died Monday morning at the age of 89. Upon hearing the news, many politicians from around the country and across the political spectrum tweeted messages of their condolences.
Lautenberg passed away “due to complications from viral pneumonia," according to a family statement as quoted by the The Washington Post . Lautenberg served two separate tenures in the Senate the first from 1982 to 2000, then again from 2002 until his death
Earlier this year, Lautenberg announced he would not run for reelection in 2014, with Newark Mayor Cory Booker considered a top contender to fill his seat. With Lautenberg's passing, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will have to pick a temporary replacement ahead of a special election for the seat coming later this year. Read more...
